What is a Modelling Portfolio?

The classic model portfolio is a collection of photographs showing what you look like in various outfits and poses; its your Resume and shows photographers and clients what you look like and what you can do!

Your modelling folio will have at least one head shot (a tight portrait), a full length photograph showing your height and body proportion and a mid shot showing you a bit more close up and in detail. In each of these shots you should be wearing a different outfit and the shots should say something a little bit different about you. A good portfolio will show off your style and versatility; what you are best suited to as a model. You need good strong images. GREAT images, WOW pictures that let you shine through.

Your folio is to show Photographers and Clients what you look like and what you can do in front of the camera.

The Looks,
A modelling portfolio should contain a head shot, a fashion shot, swimwear, lingerie or tighter fitting casual wear, an action or movement shot. An editorial (magazine) style shot and possibly a catalogue shot. If possible it is a good idea to have a mixture of studio and location (outdoor) shots in your folio.

What sort of Photographer do you need?
The best photographer for shooting a modelling portfolio is one who understands the fashion and modelling industry and how to photograph people well. If you are new to modelling you definitely want a photographer who will make you feel at ease in front of the camera allowing you bring out your best.

Styling, What to Bring.
When we are styling the shoot from your clothes (which we normally do) you will need about 5 complete outfits. Don't go overboard as we will choose the best three to give you the best look. A casual outfit, something a little more formal, swimwear or lingerie and possibly sportswear if you are the athletic type. Don't forget matching footwear and accessories and be sure all your garments are clean and freshly pressed.

Can you bring a friend?
Of course you can but be sure it is someone who is supportive of what you are doing. It might be your Mum, Dad or your best friend.
